Saint Mary on the Hill School’s baseball team won the school’s first baseball championship in more than 20 years, as the Saints defeated Episcopal Day School (EDS) 12-11 in the Augusta/Aiken Private Middle School League Championship game on April 26 at Diamond Lakes Regional Park in Augusta. Led by first-year head coach Rob Mueller, the Saints finished the 2007 season with a 10-1 record—their only loss came to EDS in the second game of the season in early March.

In the championship game, Denis Douglas started for Saint Mary’s and allowed four earned runs in four innings of work for the victory. Palmer Douglas followed with two scoreless innings of relief before closer Jeremiah Schaeffer took over in the bottom of the seventh with Saint Mary’s leading 12-7. EDS rallied for four runs in the seventh off Schaeffer and had the tying run on base with one out before Schaeffer stormed back to strike out the final two batters and clinch the championship for the Saints. Second baseman Tyler Williamson and catcher Bradley Miller each had three hits for Saint Mary’s, while Schaeffer also had a pair of hits for the Saints in the victory.

The 2007 season was a remarkable year all around. Saint Mary’s averaged 15.3 runs per game and finished with a .430 team batting average, while the pitching staff finished with a team ERA of 3.82 and held opponents to a .210 batting average.
Schaeffer led the Saints with a .655 batting average, three home runs and 21 RBI in 11 games. Six Saints posted an average of .400-or-higher, including Schaeffer, Bradley Miller (.548), Denis Douglas (.517). Collin Oliver (.500), Tyler Williamson (.485) and Brendan Douglas (.433).

Pitcher Carson Simmons led the team in victories, going 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA. Palmer Douglas finished 2-1 with a 2.10 ERA in seven games, while Alec Anderson went 2-0 with a 5.25 ERA in four games.
