Saint Mary on the Hill School’s baseball team won the school’s first baseball championship in more than 20 years, as the Saints defeated Episcopal Day School (EDS) 12-11 in the Augusta/Aiken Private Middle School League Championship game on April 26 at Diamond Lakes Regional Park in Augusta. Led by first-year head coach Rob Mueller, the Saints finished the 2007 season with a 10-1 record—their only loss came to EDS in the second game of the season in early March.

In the championship game, Denis Douglas started for Saint Mary’s and allowed four earned runs in four innings of work for the victory. Palmer Douglas followed with two scoreless innings of relief before closer Jeremiah Schaeffer took over in the bottom of the seventh with Saint Mary’s leading 12-7. EDS rallied for four runs in the seventh off Schaeffer and had the tying run on base with one out before Schaeffer stormed back to strike out the final two batters and clinch the championship for the Saints. Second baseman Tyler Williamson and catcher Bradley Miller each had three hits for Saint Mary’s, while Schaeffer also had a pair of hits for the Saints in the victory.

The 2007 season was a remarkable year all around. Saint Mary’s averaged 15.3 runs per game and finished with a .430 team batting average, while the pitching staff finished with a team ERA of 3.82 and held opponents to a .210 batting average.
Schaeffer led the Saints with a .655 batting average, three home runs and 21 RBI in 11 games. Six Saints posted an average of .400-or-higher, including Schaeffer, Bradley Miller (.548), Denis Douglas (.517). Collin Oliver (.500), Tyler Williamson (.485) and Brendan Douglas (.433).

Pitcher Carson Simmons led the team in victories, going 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA. Palmer Douglas finished 2-1 with a 2.10 ERA in seven games, while Alec Anderson went 2-0 with a 5.25 ERA in four games.

Education Institute held in Columbus

By Sister Jeannine Norton, IHM
Approximately 350 Catholic educators from around the Diocese of Savannah gathered from February 18-March 2 at Saint Anne-Pacelli School in Columbus to take part in the Professional Development Mission to “inform on major issues and methodologies centering on Catholic identity and other emerging educational trends.”
This annual event began on the evening of February 28 and ran until noon on March 2. At the opening liturgy on Wednesday evening, Bishop J. Kevin Boland focused on the special ministry of Catholic education. This ministry was enhanced throughout the next two days as educators availed themselves of keynote addresses on Human Resource Regulations and Encouraging Responsible Student Behaviors as well as being able to choose from over 29 individual sessions focusing on Religious Education and every aspect of the K-12 curriculum.
As Bishop’s Boland’s letter to the participants stated and all affirmed “it was good for us to be there.”

Sister Jeannine Norton, IHM, is Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Savannah.

Vidalia teens observe World Youth Day

By Jennifer Mitchell
The Catholic Youth Organization of Sacred Heart Parish, Vidalia, hosted a “World Youth Day” event on October 8.
The Parish Hall wasn’t big enough to hold all the activities and people, so classrooms in the Burke Educational Building were called into service as “country rooms.” While the Parish Hall served as the United States, various classrooms were transformed into miniature representations of France, Italy, Mexico and the Philippines. Typical and tasty foods were served in each room and accompanied by culturally appropriate music. Joyous dance broke out in the Italian and Filipino rooms while the consumption of food seemed to be central to the French, Mexican and U.S. rooms.
In preparing for this local “World Youth Day,” the CYO members learned about other cultures and came to appreciate them more deeply. CYO leaders Pat and Jennifer Mitchell and Ashley Beasely said that the event was a great success, bringing together the youth and parishioners in a joyful, family environment, and building unity among the various communities of the parish.

Blessed Sacrament students devote summer to Seniors

By Helen Willoughby
Unlike the typical 14 year old who spent a quiet summer relaxing from the rigors of the previous academic school year, a group of Blessed Sacrament students devoted their free time these past few months to helping others.
For the past two and a half months, a group of hard working young teens have spent three days a week, five hours a day, traveling across Chatham County, working in the hot sun and assisting Savannah seniors.
The Summer Angels program, sponsored by Senior Citizens, Inc. and funded by the Jewish Federation of Atlanta, bridges the generation gap with those who have the time, energy and inclination to lend a helping hand with those members of the community who need assistance.
The group has done everything from cutting lawns, raking leaves, or anything that the seniors needed to have done around the house, to delivering Meals on Wheels, assisting at the Ruth Byck Senior Center, visiting Hospice Centers and playing games.
At the end of the summer program, the Summer Angels were recognized by friends, family and members of the community in a special ceremony. The group also made headlines when they were chosen by WTOC-TV as worthy of Top Teen status.
Blessed Sacrament students are no strangers to community volunteerism. Last year, students partnered on several occasions with Saint Joseph’s/Candler’s community volunteer force, the Angels Of Mercy. In one of their first outings as junior angels, the group was eventually recognized as the top volunteer fundraisers by the Salvation Army for their efforts during the organization’s annual Holiday Kettle drive.
Volunteerism at the school will take on a new dimension this fall as Blessed Sacrament expands its community outreach and becomes a pilot outpost for Saint Joseph’s/Candler’s Angels of Mercy program.
