Annual appeal launches with same focus, new name: Annual Catholic Appeal

Originally Appeared in : Vol. 100 No. 01

The annual appeal has a new name to reflect its mission better. The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA), formerly known as the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, will continue to provide the same vital function of raising the yearly financial support for the programs, services and ministries that are so important to our diocese and the 77 parishes within its boundaries. The new name emphasizes and more closely represents a service to all Catholics and others in the name of Christ.

“The change allows us to represent better what the annual appeal had always been about: our parishes, programs and ministries of the diocese,” said Maureen Coates, Director of Stewardship and Development for the Diocese of Savannah.

While the name of the appeal has changed, the beneficiaries of the generous donations have not. Funds raised for the Annual Catholic Appeal are applied directly to:

  • Vocations, which includes the education of seminarians and permanent diaconate,
  • Education Ministries such as Faith Formation, Youth, and Young Adult Ministry, Campus Ministry, Family Life and Ecumenism, as well as
  • Social Service Ministries including Catholic Charities.

The appeal also includes funding for multi-cultural programs and the Departments of Communications, Technology, Stewardship and Tribunal.

Just as it was before the name change, every dollar raised through the annual appeal is used to support the mission of the diocese.

This year’s theme for the appeal, “Sowing the Seeds,” is taken from Matthew’s gospel, The Parable of the Sower.

With a goal of $2.6 million in 2020, faithful Catholics across the diocese will be asked to reflect upon the blessings in their life and will be asked to support the appeal accordingly. The Annual Catholic Appeal seeks to surpass the $2,570,600 raised in 2019 from over 7,000 households.

Bishop Hartmayer’s annual address in the appeal’s video will be shown in parishes throughout the diocese on Kick- Off Weekend, which will be January 18 and 19. The video, along with more information about the appeal, and ways to make a gift online, can be found online at diosav.org/aca.
