Bishop Hartmayer appoints campus ministry chaplains

Addressing the rationale for recruiting Campus Chaplains in a letter to pastors dated December 11, Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv., wrote, “Campus ministry is essentially ministry in higher education. It has an important role in helping students to assess the knowledge they are acquiring through the eyes of faith and to discern how they will use that knowledge in their profession. Because these young Catholics are in the process of occupying leadership roles in society, theological reflection and moral formation are key.”

The bishop also announced the Chaplains for those schools with active campus ministries: Armstrong State University, Father Jason Adams; Augusta State University, Father Vernon Knight; Columbus State University, Father. Brian O’Shaughnessy, Georgia Southern University, Father John Johnson; Mercer University, Father John Wright; Savannah State University, Deacon Hosea Bennett; Savannah College of Art and Design, Father Pablo Migone; and Valdosta State University, Father Dawid Kwiatkowski.

Abigail Byron-Goslin, the Diocesan Campus Ministry Coordinator at the Pastoral Center, will serve as the contact and resource person. In a November 9 presentation to the then prospective Chaplains Goslin stated, “Of the 8,555 Catholic college students in the Diocese of Savannah we are currently serving about 203.”
