Nearly 400 members of Saint Raymond Church in Alma, Saint Rose of Lima, Baxley and Good Shepherd, Hazelhurst celebrated the dedication of a new Church to serve the needs of all three communities on April 6.

The new church, a mile down the road from Saint Raymond, is named in honor of Saint Frances of Rome at the request of a generous donor who died in 1999. Maurice Adelman, Jr. bequeathed $290,000 for a parish or mission provided it was named for Saint Frances of Rome in recognition of Frances Fanny Toohey.

That sum of money enabled the purchase of the building with enough left over for the establishment of a trust to fund maintaining the building.

Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer OFM Conv. joined Bishop Emeritus J. Kevin Boland in blessing the building with Holy Water, anointing the altar and walls with Sacred Chrism, and blessing the altar, sanctuary space, and tabernacle with incense symbolizing our faith in the risen Christ.

The scripture was proclaimed in both Spanish and English followed by the celebration of the Eucharist.
