Pontifical College Josephinum Welcomes Apostolic Nuncio

Originally Appeared in : 9908-4/11/19

Columbus, Ohio--His Excellency, The Most Reverend Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America and Chancellor of the Pontifical College Josephinum, made a historic visit to the seminary on Saturday, March 30, 2019. Archbishop Pierre celebrated Mass in Saint Turibius Chapel, formally greeted each seminarian and faculty member, and enjoyed a festive brunch with the seminary community.

“I greet you in the name of Pope Francis,” he said, “and assure you of his prayers, his spiritual closeness, and his paternal affection.”

As the Josephinum nears a transition in the Office of the Rector/President this summer, Archbishop Pierre acknowledged the service of Reverend Monsignor Christopher J. Schreck, a priest of the Diocese of Savannah, who has served as rector since 2012. “I want to publicly thank Monsignor Schreck who will finish his term as rector,” he said. “He has served faithfully for seven years; an ordinary term is only five years, but he generously agreed to stay an additional two years. Monsignor, thank you for all you have done!” Monsignor Schreck will begin a one-year sabbatical commencing July 1, 2019, before receiving his next assignment.

Present also for the festive visit was the Very Reverend Steven P. Beseau, a priest of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, who will assume the office of Rector/President of the Josephinum on July 1, 2019. Welcoming Father Beseau, Archbishop Pierre said, “I know the new bishop [of Columbus], the faculty and staff, and students are looking forward to your leadership and to a fruitful collaboration in the formation of new priests.”

Archbishop Pierre’s stay at the Josephinum was his second visit to the seminary since his appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America and Chancellor of the Josephinum by Pope Francis in 2016; he presided at the dedication of Saint Turibius Chapel following completion of its historic restoration and renovation in April 2017.
