Deacon George Foster, former Diaconate Director, dies after long illness

Deacon George H. Foster, 87, who served as director for the Permanent Diaconate of the Diocese of Savannah, died July 1 in Lexington, South Carolina. Former Savannah Bishop Raymond W. Lessard appointed Foster to head the diaconate program in 1981. A Commissioned Army Officer in the Medical Service Corps, Deacon Foster retired from the military in 1982.

Deacon Foster directed the selection and formation of five classes of men for ordination and worked with the academic formation faculty of St. Leo University in Tampa, Florida to prepare future candidates for ordination.



Foster, from Evans ,GA, was assisted by his wife, Georgia Foster, who died in 2017. The couple was married for 64 years and had six children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.​
