Sister Grace Agate, RSM, dies in Savannah

Sister Grace Leggio Agate, RSM, age 71, a member of the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community died Oct. 14 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.


Sister Agate’s varied ministries included 12 years in elementary education in the Brooklyn diocese and 12 years teaching religion at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, New York. She also ministered in vocation and formation ministry, spiritual direction, adult faith formation and as the director of religious education at local parishes. Her most recent ministry was workplace spirituality coordinator for the staff of St. Joseph’s/ Candler Hospital at Savannah.


As a Sister of Mercy for 53 years, Sister Agate is remembered for her graciousness, depth of spirituality, hospitality, and simplicity. Her energy, love, enthusiasm and joy in living were outward expressions of her commitment to her God, so aptly expressed in her motto: “My God and my all.”


Her wake was held Oct.18, at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone, New York. The funeral was held Oct. 19 at the convent. Burial followed at St. John’s Cemetery in Queens, New York.
