St. Francis Xavier Church in Brunswick, named for and by the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) who first served at the church as early as 1844, celebrated its 150th anniversary Dec. 2 with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv. For 500 years the sacraments have been celebrated in the Golden Isles by priests traveling with Spanish explorers, according to the parish Facebook. The parish has also been served by diocesan priests (1871-1897, 2014-present), the Marists (1897-1988) and Conventual Franciscans (1988-2014).

But the two meetings reflected different times and also ended with different results.
