Nearly 400 members of Saint Raymond Church in Alma, Saint Rose of Lima, Baxley and Good Shepherd, Hazelhurst celebrated the dedication of a new Church to serve the needs of all three communities on April 6.

The new church, a mile down the road from Saint Raymond, is named in honor of Saint Frances of Rome at the request of a generous donor who died in 1999. Maurice Adelman, Jr. bequeathed $290,000 for a parish or mission provided it was named for Saint Frances of Rome in recognition of Frances Fanny Toohey.

Long term planning by members of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Port Wentworth and then pastor Fr. Michael Kavanaugh who began the discussions of establishing a parish in Pooler came to fruition on Dec. 23 when Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer OFM Conv., and Bishop Emeritus J. Keven Boland blessed the Corpus Christi altar and the new parish center.  (see pages 14-15)
More than 300 people filled the worship space in the multi-purpose building for the blessing of the long awaited home for the Catholic Communty in Pooler.
