Following is the text of Bishop Hartmayer's homily from Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B, September 2, 2018):

 

A smoker for 35 years had quit his bad habit.  He had been smoke- free for 20 years; the damage done to his lungs during his nicotine addiction had begun to reverse.

As I look at the State of the Diocese of Savannah for the past 12 months, I am overwhelmed with the generosity and diversity of the tens of thousands of people who worship and minister in the 77 parishes and missions in South Georgia.

Ever since the announcement in September of this year that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) is to end, my hope has been that Congress acts swiftly and effectively to provide a sensible solution that will be beneficial to the young men and women who now have DACA protections.
