Thirty-eight years is a long time to do anything. At 73 years old, Helen Beddow can relate to that. Since 1979, Helen has been the organist and music director at Saint James Catholic Church in Savannah. Her almost four-decades came to an end on March 26 when Helen led the music at all four weekend Masses for the last time.
WAYCROSS—At first glance, it may not seem like much. Approximately 15 mature adults sit on metal and plastic folding chairs around tables strewn with bingo cards purchased at the price of five for a dollar.
But to the players, who call themselves the Wise Angels of Saint Joseph Church, it’s an outlet, an opportunity to socialize and to some, even a form of therapy.
After consultation with the College of Consultors, Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv. announced that the former Notre Dame Academy, the school gym and the parking lot at 1709 Bull St. is the possession and responsibility of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Parish in Savannah.
The College of Consultors is an administrative body composed of priests appointed by the bishop and required by the church’s canon law. The Consultors offer advice to the bishop on a variety of issues.
“That’s 118 years that your family have been devout parishioners at Saint Teresa’s in Albany, right?” I queried as I quickly did the math in my head. I questioned further, “How do you explain your family’s longevity and commitment to Saint Teresa’s?”
